In case you didn’t know, I love WordPress.
I started using WordPress in 2007. Back then it was merely a blogging platform. Today, WordPress is the top content management system, and powers about 14.7% of the web (as revealed by Matt Mullenweg during WordCamp San Francisco 2011) . I use WordPress to build 90% of my projects. Using the CMS, I am able to build a variety of sites with it, from simple static sites to complex webapps. As a blogger, business owner, or simple user, you are able to fully control the content of your site in an easy & elegant way.
What I do with WordPress
Based on the needs of each client:
- I modify existing themes or build themes from scratch. Most of the time, I find theme frameworks bloated with features that a particular project doesn’t require. This confuses users when making changes in the backend, and it can slow down the loading of pages. I usually build themes from scratch when a custom look is desired, in which case I partner up with designers. All themes are coded following WordPress best practices. In some cases, an existing theme is more suitable than building a new one from scratch, thus in addition to building my own themes, I work with a number of premium themes and theme frameworks including Genesis, WooThemes, and others.
- I modify existing plugins or build them from scratch. One of the main features of WordPress, and a contributing factor to its popularity, is its extensibility via plugins. Wether you’ve found a plugin that almost does what you want it to, or you want to introduce new functionality to WordPress, I can code a plugin that will accommodate your needs. When possible, I release plugins built for clients back into the public as open-source plugins.
- I review code and offer recommendations. I’ll look over your WordPress theme. plugin or overall installation and suggest numerous improvements for your site in terms of coding standards, security, performance, SEO and overall best practices.
- I host WordPress sites. I offer WordPress-optmized hosting solutions. If you host with me, we’ll let the hosting giants (MediaTemple, Rackspace & PHPfog) manage the infrastructure, and I will manage your server, run regular maintenance and optimize it for WordPress and your content, so that you can have an online presence without the headaches. Because I run servers on a higher-volume level, you also save money as compared to buying and running your own server.
What I’ve done with WordPress
I’ve built and contributed to several plugins for WordPress:
- WP Super Mailer gives you the power of external mailing services so that blog and custom posts can be subscribed to and mailings automatically sent.
- Custom Metadata Manager: An easy way to add custom fields to your object types (post, pages, custom post types, users).
- SLD Register Post Types & Taxonomies for WordPress: Developer-focused plugin that provides an extended API to register post types and taxonomies (and unregister taxonomies) much easier and more efficiently than with default WordPress APIs
- Github Plugin updater: This class is meant to be used with your Github hosted WordPress plugins. The purpose of the class is to allow your WordPress plugin to be updated whenever you push out a new version of your plugin; similarly to the experience users know and love with the WordPress.org plugin repository.
- WordPress Editorial Calendar: The editorial calendar gives you an overview of your site and when each content entry will be published. You can drag and drop to move entries, edit entries right in the calendar, and manage your entire blog. I am contributing developer to the plugin, led by Stresslimit Design and Zack Grossbart.
- Log Deprecated Notices Extender: extends Andrew Nacin’s Log Deprecated Notices to show a link in the WP 3.3+ Toolbar.
- The Events Calendar & The Events Calendar Pro: The Events Calendar is a fully featured event management system with multiple views, 3rd party integrations, and a slew of premium add-ons. Produced by Modern Tribe Inc (I’m an active developer on their freelancing team)
- Not quite a plugin, but more of a resource, WP Search is a search-engine made just for WordPress developers that searches a number of WordPress resources.

I’ve also given a talk at WordCamp Montreal in July 2011 about WordPress custom post types, as well as led a conversation round-table at WordCamp Portland in September 2011.

How I’ve contributed to WordPress
Starting in 2011, I’ve made several contributions to the WordPress.org open-source project. I regularly participate in the support forums, and I create, reply to and commit bugs and tickets on the WordPress Trac. I was listed as a contributor for WordPress 3.2, and plan/hope to get patches in for version 3.4 and future versions!
See my WordPress.org profile for my up-to-date contributions to WordPress.
Every site and every client is different, which is why I don’t offer any "packages" or "deals". For your reference, my hourly rate is $75/hr. If you are interested in a custom website solution or have any questions, let's talk.
